Our Sunday School Outreach program, in most cases, endeavors to reach
out to those either in the immediate Huntsville area or in neighboring
areas and counties in Northern Alabama. In every case, we strive to
introduce our participants to young people who may not be as fortunate
as they and offer the participants the opportunity to give something
of themselves to all these brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. Our
Outreach focus changes periodically in approximately 4-6 week intervals
and has recently included, but has not been limited to, the following
groups or organizations:
Salvation Army (Huntsville/Decatur)
Downtown Rescue Mission
DRM Sapp Shelter for Women & Children
Huntsville Food Pantry
ABC Friendship Home (Anniston, AL)
Checkpoint: Afghanistan
Our first Sunday School special offering of the year will be in support
of the local Harris
Home for Children. The Home's founders, George and Chessie Harris,
began serving children in 1954. Their true love and compassion for
the neglected and destitute children of Huntsville led them to found
the Home in order that they could share their resources with such
children. The home provides full-time foster care for up to 23 children
children between the ages of 12-21 and has served more than 1500 children
since its official incorporation in 1960. In addition, Harris Home
facilitates an after school program for 25 more "at risk"
children, an independent living program to prepare another 15 older
youth for selfsufficiency, plus other programs to aid troubled youth
up through the age of 21. And this is where we in Education Outreach
come in! Beginning Sunday, August 15th, we will be collecting items
to lend a helping hand to those adults who have put their own lives
on hold to help nurture this next generation ... to give them the
Christian direction they need in their troubled lives! The scope of
their needs is very similar to a grocery list that you may have for
your house around this same time of year, and that's quite handy:
you can just pick-up a few extra items when you do your regular shopping!
The list of items we will be collecting is as follows:
Cleaning Supplies -- bathroom cleaners, dish liquid,
dishwasher detergent, floor cleaners, laundry detergent, dryer sheets,
glass cleaner, Clorox wipes; and air fresheners.
Non-Perishable Foods - canned foods (fruits, veggies,
soups & sauces), rice, pasta, cake mixes, meal starters and dessert
mixes.
School Supplies - notebooks, looseleaf paper, pencils,
pens, erasers, scissors, crayons & markers.
As always, there will be a box located under the Education Bulletin
Board and we will receive items during Sunday School opening*
